It drapes beautifully when wearing, making it appear as if it moves on its own. The fabric made from knitting is more stretchy, as the loops are formed by the yarn. And when blended with elastane or spandex, it can significantly stretch, making it highly elastic.

How Stretchy Is Viscose Fabric?

How stretchy viscose is depends on what type of weave or knit it is and whether it contains elastane, elastane blends, or spandex.

Woven viscose fabric has little or no stretch and should not be relied on to return to its original shape when stretched sideways. It might have some give when pulled gently, but it won’t hold its shape if pulled too hard. Woven viscose is not stretchy like jersey, leggings, or athletic knit fabrics.

Knit viscose has moderate stretch and will likely keep its shape when worn. Viscose jersey is a knit fabric with good stretch that doesn’t require much give. Some viscose fabrics will stretch out of shape when worn.

Viscose stretch ranges from low in woven fabric to high in elastane blends

Does Viscose Stretch When Worn?

Viscose might stretch out of shape, especially in the knees, elbows, hips, and seat. This is not elastic recovery, but it is common for viscose clothing to stretch out over time in these places.

Lightweight viscose or knit viscose is more likely to baggy than other weaves and knits. Garment construction, washing, and wearing also affect the likelihood of bagginess.

Viscose Blends With Elastane (Spandex)

If you want a stretchy viscose fabric, look for viscose/Elastane or viscose/spandex blends. A fabric with elastic fibers such as elastane or spandex will likely be stretchy, even in small percentages.

Some common blends are:

95% viscose, 5% elastane

92% viscose, 8% elastane

Viscose, polyester, and Elastane blends

These viscose blends are common in dresses, shirts, leggings, underwear, and loungewear. Always check the fiber content since two “viscose” fabrics might have significantly different stretch percentages.

Does Viscose Stretch When Wet?

Yes, Viscose is weak when wet and can permanently stretch when wet, shrunken, or bent. When laundered, it is best not to wring or twist viscose clothing since this will weaken the fibers and cause permanent stretching. You should also reshape damp clothing and lay it flat to dry if possible, following the manufacturer’s care instructions.

Is Stretchy Viscose Good for Fitted Clothes?

Woven viscose shouldn’t be used for tight clothes because it’s not as stretchy. Pure woven viscose is best suited for loose-fitting blouses, flowing dresses, skirts, scarves, and comfortable trousers.

Jersey viscose or a viscose-elastane blend is the best option for fitted clothing since it has better stretch recovery properties and allows the most movement. If in doubt, always test the fabric before buying by stretching it and seeing if it retains its shape.

Conclusion-

So, is viscose fabric stretchy? The answer depends on the weave. Pure woven viscose is not stretchy, while knitted viscose has some stretch due to the knitting process. If you want good stretch and recovery, opt for viscose blends with elastane or spandex.

Read More>> Is Viscose a Good Fabric?

The viscose fabric is not very stretchy, as the woven viscose has almost no elasticity due to its nature.
